As a (casual) fan of Voivod since the ’80s, it’s painful to insult the band, but this mash of metal and horns has been done far better by others. A finger-snapping butt-shaking boogie like Devin Townsend’s “Bad Devil” and jaw-dropping schizo/schmaltz by Dog Fashion Disco/Polkadot Cadaver is haunting metal + Middle Eastern instruments = amazement. And Jim Thirlwells’ staggering, gut-wrenching Foetus projects? Tod A.’s Cop Shoot Cop/Firewater bass-thick blackout waltzes? Seriously, this is pretty rudimentary, even the “freak out.” Pleasant, but raw and simple.
