Gilby Clarke
Rubber (Pavement)
by Martin Popoff
Rubber rides terrain similar to The Hangover from barely a year back: Gilby Clarke shouting out his influences, adding to his coterie of Stones, Bowie, and Beatles covers, a total overhaul of Janis Joplin’s “Mercedes Benz” and lesser changes within the New York Dolls’ “Trash.” Add to that mod touches from Pumpkins and Our Lady Peace, old blues flourishes and the inescapable imprint of low-slung Gunners guitar, and you have the complicated but oh-so-simple make-up of a spin with Gilby.
