Team Dresch fuses the personal and the political into one ass-kicking powerhouse. In America today, being a dyke is a political statement, and these four lezbionic chicks don’t back off a millimeter. They’re not afraid to call a major-label musician who mooches off minor labels a “little slacker fuck.” They’re also not afraid of singing the line “My girlfriend cuddles me and holds me when I cry/I tell that I’m scared/ask if she thinks I’ll die.” “My Dirty Hands are Mined” is the best little gem of the whole bunch, a song about the shit a girl gets for liking other girls. The line “Don’t be a whore” is so plaintive, so wrenching, it goes way beyond sexuality. The heavy assault of guitars quiets when Jody sings, allowing us to eavesdrop on her thoughts. “107” is a ditty about Kaia being afraid of heights and holding her date’s hand for comfort. You can actually feel the dizzy swaying sensation in the gentle tug-o’-war of Kaia and Jody’s voices. Admittedly, there are a couple of clunkers. Luckily, most of the album rocks tit. If you thought Marlene Dietrich looked hot in that suit, buy this ode to Sapphic love and rage.
