Alice Donut – Dry Humping the Cash Cow – Review

Alice Donut

Dry Humping the Cash Cow (Alternative Tentacles)
by Paul Lee

Wacked is an interesting word. I apply this word to the folks in Alice Donut who have been releasing their own brand of weirdness on Alternative Tentacles. They have a new live album Dry Humping the Cash Cows (I told you they’re odd) playing the best of their last four studio releases.

The live disc probably is a good testament to the caustic humor and hard sound that seems to define Alice Donut. It was recorded live at CBGB’s with enhanced crowd effects making it seem like they played at an arena show throughout the entire 70 minutes. Alice Donut are original and funny but wear thin after a while. They know what they’re doing musically and having a trombone replace the vocals in a cover of the Beatles “Helter Skelter” was a novel touch.

Alice Donut seem to be alluring having risen out of the trashy Greenwich Village scene but it’s hard to tell how good they are amongst the chaos and silliness of DHCC. They sure are original and probably put on an outlandish and lively show.
