Big Red Crush

with 6L6 at Local 186

We got the LOUD bill tonight at the Local 186: 6L6 and Big Red Crush. Speaking of crush, the place is jammed and I’m glad I talked to 6L6’s Ted Condo by phone first.

Opening were popular upstarts Big Red Crush, slamming out new material from their latest self-titled cassette. A relatively new act started by drummer E.K., they are a chronic throb of energy on stage and fully command their audience. “I had a lot of opportunities in bands before this,” E.K. relates, “but ended up losing it all to drugs and alcohol.” Among those bands were Cycle Sluts from Hell and Sick of it All, now on East/West. “I’ve been clean two years now, and I’ve never enjoyed playing music more.” An admirable quality in a band we expect big things from in the future.

Seems 6L6 have a new 10-song CD slated for November on Summit Records, which Ted says is “equally abrasive, but less punk.”

Condo still writes all the lyrics, but on at least three of the CD’s new songs, the music was written by his bandmates.

“I’d sing their lyrics too, if they wrote me some…” he explains. Burning as ever tonight, the Thunder Gods had the pit going hard, and much to my chagrin, I see my Editor drunkenly bouncing around in there.
