Gluegun – at The Rat – Review

Gluegun

at The Rat
by Joey Ammo

I noticed the Gluegun posters on my many nights at the Rathskeller in Kenmore Square. The psychedelic photo on the poster made me think the singer was another one of those Belly-type female vocalists who are being shoved down our throats. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

BCN rumble winners the Dirt Merchants opened up with a strong set of heart-felt tunes and left a good-sized crowd ready for the headliners. Gluegun came out firing with wild props and spiderweb pattern lights. Their lead singer is an absolutely beautiful woman with a tremendous amount of character. Her Princess Leah hair style and cheerleader outfit were a refreshing change from the usual, but what really blew me away was her vocal performance. With the technical ability and tone of the B52’s, she belted dissonant melodies like Björk on steroids. Animatedly, she contorted her face and bounced around as if showered with machine gun fire.

If you’re tired of the weak female vocal style that abounds these days, go see Gluegun or buy their new release. This woman is a great talent.
