Mauthmann – The Terror of Bojangles Maximus – Review

Mauthmann

The Terror of Bojangles Maximus
by Chris Adams

Mauthmann is a project formed by members of such local Boston rock groups as The Keep, Heroic Spacefish, and Tonic Puppy. From what I can gather from this tape, the idea behind Mauthmann is to create concept albums wiped free of all the indulgence and embarrassing heavy-handedness that we’ve come to associate with that genre. For the most part, it works. I’m not sure if I follow the story of Bojangles Maximus, a monster that descends Godzilla-style on an unsuspecting world and wreaks havoc – but it doesn’t matter. The concept is supplemented by some serious no-frills garage pop/rock, which manages to avoid any conceptual art-wank pretense through sheer aggression and solid songwriting.
