The Pietasters – Strapped Live – Review

The Pietasters

Strapped Live (Moon)
by Grant Thayer

First off, I love The Pietasters and I wish they would get the hell up to Boston! Since they haven’t been here in a long time, I’m psyched to have this disc. Its hard to capture the fun, energy and excitement of a live show on disc, but this here disc does it. This is The Pietasters’ third full-length (the first is out of print and highly sought), and their second on Moon Records, THE ska label. Strapped Live features songs from the first two studio albums, as well as several new songs. The production is very good, with clear definition of instruments and a nice, clean mix. You get that club-like feeling with some background noise and chatter between songs. My mother heard part of the CD, and especially liked when they request a blowjob for one of the band members who was celebrating a birthday. “Must Catch A Train” has Caz Gardener (Checkered Cabs) joining on vocals and adding nice harmonies on the slower, almost rock-steady song. Performance-wise, the live shows (recorded over two nights) show how tight the band is, and gives a glimpse of how The Pietasters have grown over the past 5 years. If you’ve never heard The Pietasters, most of the songs are about sex and women, so go out and buy it for that reason and you will soon be wanting more tastes of this Pie.
