Unwound – at the Rat – Review

Unwound

at the Rat
by Nicole Howard

These three tear your eyes out of the sockets and throw them around to each other like they’re bouncy balls, then jam them back in there. You don’t see things the same afterwards. Unwound are a lighter Pitchshifter crossed with a less junky Front 242. They are pure, taking the typical industrial sound and banging it out of contortion, then using and abusing what’s left. They flirt into an opposite realm entirely with strange intermittent alien noises proving that they’re from anywhere but here.

The crowd went crazy for the user-friendly “For Your Entertainment,” a kick-ass transportational song that sends shivers up the spine. Unfortunately, their lyrics were difficult to understand, which is a shame because they’re pure genius. Unwound is appropriately named because that’s what they do to you and what they’ve done to themselves to produce such a catastrophic, mind-shattering sound.
