Southern Culture on the Skids – Plastic Seat Sweat – Review

Southern Culture on the Skids

Plastic Seat Sweat (DGC)

I suppose one of the points head Skidder Rick Miller makes with his band is that folks oughtta be proud of their background, even if that includes the naugahyde, shotgun weddings, day-old pudding and the rest of the stuff social betters sneer at as “White Trash.” Southern Culture on the Skids is all about celebrating the gasping fits and death rattle of below Mason Dixon country livin’ that’s been goin’ on since 1865, which makes ’em a sorta subversive polar opposite to the Countrypolitan line dance reactionary utopia that gets sold as authentic Southernism to any sucker who can afford a Stetson and a big ole belt buckle. As such, yer gonna find yerself smirkin’ along to cuts like “Carve That Possum,” “40 Miles to Vegas” and “Country Funk,” cuz, well, it’s Hee Haw humor, but trust me, Miller, bassist Mary Huff, and drummer Dave Hartman are laughin’ along with ya. Judging by the way they fuse punk’s chug with cowbell rock twang, it’s clear they know exactly what they’re doin’. Countrysploitation anyone?
