The Absolute Zeros
Dreams Gone Sour (Big Deal)
by Katy Shea
Absolute Zero is the theoretical temperature at which there is a complete absence of heat/energy. The bio boasts of singer Steve Deal’s “insouciant delivery,” now, I know it’s an obvious cheap shot, but as far as I’m concerned, they’ve invited it upon themselves. The band possesses the originality and dynamic power of cigarette butts caught in a storm drain. Dreams Gone Sour is power pop with the inventiveness and drive of a chain-smoking steel rivot driver. Taking influences like The Who and Small Faces and milking these foundations of sound so that the listener almost feels this CD is worth a listen, until ultimately, all hope is vanquished in a wash of artless banality.
