Seksu Roba
Pleasure Vibrations (Eenie Meenie)
by Michael McCarthy
I thought this was a porn soundtrack when I first saw the album cover. Does the title not reek of sex toys, or am I just a perv? And Seksu Roba sounds like a porn star name to my ears. A lovely, exotic porn star, but still…
I suppose the disc is actually called Pleasure Vibrations because the theremin is one of the group’s primary instruments. If you don’t know what the theremin is, I suggest you subscribe to the Sundance Channel or IFC because they seem to be airing documentaries in which it figures prominently at least once a day. (Endorsement deal, conspiracy, or hell simply freezing over?) Or you could check out www.thereminworld.com
Seksu Roba is also down with le mini-Moog, but their music sounds a lot more like Felix Da Housecat and Ladytron to me. And even more like Miss Kittin. It’s slightly more organic sounding, and that’s certainly not a bad thing, but it’s very much in the vein of glitz or electroclash or whatever they’re calling it this week. You can certainly dance to “L.A. Freeway” and “Hesitation,” and I imagine you’d have a fun time if you did. Other tracks, including the title track, are more airy – or even Air-ey – and seem more about creating a trippy mood than something to groove to. It still works as an album though. Some lame and redundant lyrics aside, most of this disc is catchy and superior to much of the electroclash DJs are currently spinning in da clubs.
