Metalheads had a collective forehead-slapping moment the first time we heard of Mastodon. Duh, how could such an absolutely perfect metal band name not be taken for so long? That should’ve been the name of, like, the second metal band formed after Sabbath. One-man band Nonexistence seems to have struck similar gold with its album title Antarctica. Seeing as how the continent is a vast, harsh, desolate, ice cold expanse of misery, it’s amazing that it’s taken this long for it to get its due from the metal world. Far from being a joyless journey across the frozen tundra, though, the music is catchier and more welcoming than you might expect.
