What she lacks in vocal range, Japan’s Chara has always made up for with her diverse songwriting, and she continues this tradition on Madrigal, a kaleidoscope of beautiful songs that never sound quirky just for the sake of being quirky.
Speed is said to be more popular, but the J-Pop group I recommend first is Max. Like Speed, they’re a group of cute young teens with irresistible, upbeat songs. I’m hopelessly addicted to their Maximum Groove disc.
My favorite J-Pop solo artist is Chara. She’s got plenty of amusing pop songs, but the lyrics are often more profane than anything Madonna’s ever released.
