Puffy Amiyumi – Hi Hi – Review

May 9, 2005

The official soundtrack to theiranimated series, Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi, on Cartoon Network. It’s far superior to the 2002 An Illustrated History Of (on Bar None).

Lene Marlin – Another Day – Review

April 18, 2005

A catchy yet lingering acoustic-based pop gem as heartfelt as anything by Dido or Norah Jones. Not an album you listen to, it’s an album you experience.

De-Lovely – Review

March 7, 2005

Kevin Kline is masterful – and often barely recognizable – as legendary composer Cole Porter (1893-1964) in this biopic that doubles as a musical. Ashley Judd, finally free from the realm of bad suspense thrillers, also delivers her best work in years, deeply affecting in the role of his highly-supportive wife and muse, Linda Porter. It’s never easy to cram someone’s life into a two hour film, but director Irwin Winkler and writer Jay Cocks have made an earnest effort. From Paris to Venice, and Broadway to Hollywood, there’s little ground they don’t cover, the downside being that much of the film feels like a montage.

Miss Kittin – I Com – Review

January 10, 2005

Miss Kittin & The Hacker’s First Album was a genre-defining disc. That genre, of course, is electroclash. I Com, her first solo album, is quite an achievement.

Velvet Revolver – Contraband – Review

December 13, 2004

Contraband is a fantastic ALBUM, something you’ll want to play from start to finish, not unlike G N’ R’s Appetite For Destruction or the first few STP discs.

Mylene Farmer – Remixes – Review

November 15, 2004

Remixes is quite fascinating, not just because of who did the remixes, but because of how fluid it is. Quite a coup to get these cats to remix French pop.

Patricia Kaas – Sexe Fort – Review

November 15, 2004

Kaas returned to her roots as a jazz and blues-influenced French pop diva. She knows what she does best, and that’s belt out emotional songs en français.
