Looking to go a few round with some hard driving, straight-up, girl-punk power pop? Put up your dukes, because Magnapop comes out punching on their new Priority record CD, Hot Boxing. (Enough with the horrible tie-in metaphors.) Produced by Bob Mould (Sugar/Husker Du) to crisp, deadly perfection, this two-girl, two-guy foursome knows how to make a three-minute melody linger on the brain cells. The single “Slowly, Slowly” has already become a radio staple, and a recent show at Axis proved they can climb in the ring live as well (cut it out!). Like a female Green Day, Magnapop pogoed punkly about the Landsdowne stage, cramming one gem after another down the crowd’s throat. Hot Boxing might not win the heavyweight title, but it’s definitely a contender.
