Zuzu’s Petals

The night took a forward turn toward subtlety as Zuzu’s Petals (Twin/Tone) took the stage. They lacked the energy and attitude to be punk, and didn’t play well enough to be anything but. It’s kinda sad when you don’t play badly well enough to justify your crappy sound. I’ve read and heard the hype calling them clever, smart, sincere, gritty, poppy, and charming. I though they mucked about in mid-tempo monotony and whined shallow witticisms. They droned rather than built up to anything and lacked the balls and/or the bitchiness to make it fly. Maybe I just wasn’t numb enough to like them, but I tried hard on both accounts.
