The Verve – A Northern Soul – Review

The Verve

A Northern Soul (Vernon Yard)
by Chris Adams

The title of The Verve‘s last album, A Storm in Heaven, is pretty indicative of their music. To wit: Swirling, tempestuous psychedelia laden with starospheric atmospheres and a melancholic mood. Think of the better U2 stuff crossed with Chris Bells’ “I Am the Cosmos,” and you’ll have a general idea. Ideal for those who smoke bucket-loads of hash alone in their living rooms after 2 AM. A Northern Soul is my current favorite record by an English band which has had to alter its name due to a half-assed lawsuit by some forgotten American one-hit wonder.
