Nailbomb – Proud to Commit Commercial Suicide – Review

Nailbomb

Proud to Commit Commercial Suicide (Roadrunner)
by Paul Lee

If their first studio effort wasn’t forceful enough to make your ears turn inside out and gush buckets of blood, then Nailbomb‘s second and final release, the live Proud To Commit Commercial Suicide, will cause unbelievable bodily damage. Conceived as a temporary side project, Nailbomb’s only live show, at Holland’s Dynamo Festival in Summer ’94, is captured here with all the caustic fury you’d expect (and then some), plus two half-decent studio cuts.

In case you hadn’t heard, Sepultura’s Max Cavalera and the now defunct Fudge Tunnel’s Alex Newport formed Nailbomb as a limited-life side project. On their first release Point Blank, Newport and Cavalera created some incendiary songs that didn’t quite fit the style of their respective outfits. Point Blank blasted forth mutations between hardcore, noise, and industrial styles. It was impressive for a low-budget creation that’s even better live.

While most industrial acts falter in a live setting, at the Dynamo Fest, Nailbomb picked up energy and intensity like an uncontrollable inferno finding a dynamite factory. With the help of a backing band and guest appearances by Evan of Biohazard and Igor of Sepultura, Nailbomb tear through tunes like “Wasting Away,” “World of Shit,” “Guerrillas” and even a cover of the Dead Kennedy’s “Police Truck.” This is an album full of blistering, cranium-crunching performances without overdubs. This is raw! Proud to Commit… is actually an improvement over their already excellent studio album. If this is all that Newport and Cavalera plan to leave the world of the Nailbomb legacy, then Proud to Commit… is a great place to make their exit. They go out with a true sonic boom.
