Tiki Tones – Idol Pleasures – Review

Tiki Tones

Idol Pleasures (Mai Tai)
by Mark Phinney

Remember the episode of the Brady Bunch when they go to Hawaii? The one where Greg and the boys find that ancient taboo tiki? And remember how they then embarke on solving the mystery of the graven god of step sibling copulation? Everything works out in the end, as usual, save a startling encounter with Vincent Price (fully clothed and not luxuriating sudsy and giggling in a tropical waterfall). Then everyone has a BIG party (sort of).

Well, this is what oozes into the brainwaves when listening to the fab-oo sounds of the Tiki Tones‘ newest offering. Some call it surf, others lounge, but take it from me; it’s neither. It’s island cheese, and mighty groovy cheese at that. The instrumental shaking exuding from The Tones may be lounge, but definitely not your typical lounge. They conjure up the ritualistic sounds of island encounters, or a little vacation nostalgia. I imagine them doing soundtrack music for exotic getaway cruise come-ons. This is music to soothe and satisfy those primitive urges. There’re no two ways around it, The Tiki Tones are the volcano gods of island lounge. Smooth as a banana daquiri. Mix well with any umbrella drink, and unwind in the bamboo nightlife with island sounds from Tiki Tones.
