Asphyx – God Cries – Review

Asphyx

God Cries (Century Media)
by Chris Dick

Who’d have thought Holland’s Asphyx would compose an album like God Cries? I couldn’t make it halfway through the band’s previous release, so I surely didn’t. Asphyx had magnificent demos and their first album, The Rack, was completely crushing, and their Crush the Cenotaph EP signaled great things to come. We all know what happened. And Asphyx faded into obscurity. Out of obscurity comes God Cries with all the devastating potential Asphyx had at the start. It’s good to hear old scensters make a great album when so many of their peers are winding down their careers; I don’t think I need to mention names here. God Cries is one hell of a death metal album that has all the traits good death metal should: great musicianship and songwriting ability. Arise Bob Bagchus, a powerful vocalist. Say cheers Theo Loomans, and the belief to keep the scene going by creating fresh sounds, even if it is two albums belated.
