Electro Phunk – Review

Electro Phunk

(Adrenalin)
by Joshua Brown

Electro is the nexus point where old school and new school meet, a simultaneous class reunion, opening day of a new semester. Electrik Music’s classic mix of Afrika Bambataa & Soulsonic Force’s “Don’t Stop the Planet Rock” is infused with new life when placed alongside new pioneers of electro. Electro Phunk’s vibe is defined by its last track’s title, “Heavy Water” by Anoesis. The formidable weight of the grooves account for “heavy,” and “water” refers to the natural and uninhibited flow in the collaborative mix by DJs Hardware and SHARPe. Electro can be thought of as the counterpoint of dub reggae. Dub was the early foundation that genres such as hip hop, techno, and house were built upon, whereas electro is more like a distillation of what has made these later genres irresistible. Although it can be rightly called “basic,” it doesn’t require patience to appreciate. Electro comes with built-in patience. With each groove methodically placing an auditory aura that surrounds the listener. Since an aura is not reactive in a physical sense but on a deeper, less dense level, Electro Phunk gives the listener virtually unlimited space to more around.
