Tura Satana – Relief Through Release – Review

Tura Satana

Relief Through Release (FAD)

It’s appropriate that the L.A.-based Manhole changed their name to match the ass-kicking Russ Meyer actress, Tura Satana, because of frontwoman Tairrie B.’s kitten-with-a-9mm image. Musically, Tura Satana’s guitar-bass-drum troupe pumps out a dynamic chunky metal barrage that alternates between brutal riffs and tension-building grooves. On the vocal tip, Tairrie is a far cry from the rapping style of her days as part of Eazy E’s posse. Instead, she has a Rage-meets-Korn-like rant style that sways between pit-provoking belts and conviction-thick spoken word. Adhering to the norm by doing a cover song, they opt for Nirvana’s “Negative Creep,” a track far from the usual shopping grounds. With all of the male voices dominating the alterna-metal market, it’s good to hear a woman who’s just as rugged on the mic, and still maintains her sexuality.
