Mortician – Chainsaw Dismemberment – Review

Mortician

Chainsaw Dismemberment (Relapse)
by Paul Lee

As I listen to this ultra-gory and extreme death metal album by Mortician, I wonder what the attraction of this NY outfit is. Granted, they’ve tuned their guitars as low as humanly possible and have great, tasteless cover art, but musically, I don’t see anything. No memorable riffs, no musical talent, nothing. There’s almost no variation between songs, and their drum machine sounds cheap. A real drummer probably wouldn’t help matters much as there’s very little substance to Mortician’s songs. I’ve heard Mortician’s previous album Hacked Up For Barbecue and Chainsaw sound practically the same. The vocals are low and inhuman but hardly have any power behind them. Add typical gore and horror lyrics and you have a recipe for bland and hardly-scary death metal. Don’t’ waste your time on this one, spend it on the new Cannibal Corpse instead.
