H2O – Go – Review

H2O

Go (MCA)
by Tim Den

H2O has gotten even poppier than FTTW on their major label debut, the not-so-cleverly named Go (after the band’s trademarked count-off before every song: “H-2-O-go” instead of 1-2-3-4). I guess I saw this coming, with that almost-too-natural sounding cover of The Smiths’ “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” tipping me off a few years back.

I always knew these guys would become more melodic as time went on, and thank goodness I was right, cuz their straight-hardcore shit just doesn’t cut it. Go is powerchords glazed with sweetness; singalongs at every turn. And while the next album might see H2O dangerously close to commercial rock (if their current pattern of evolution continues), at least they found a nice balance on FTTW and on this record. Oh… and someone please tell me they’re not serious about that “Like a Prayer” cover.
