Red Animal War – Breaking in an Angel – Review

Red Animal War

Breaking in an Angel (Deep Elm)
by Tim Den

Breaking in an Angel shows that “Backbreaker” (from The Emo Diaries Chapter Four) was no fluke. More complex than ever, Red Animal War has incorporated elements of razor-sharp guitar swipes into their former emo selves. Jolting rhythms and high-pitched chords evoke At The Drive-In comparisons, but guitarist/vocalist Justin Wilson’s warm voice continuously holds down a shade of tranquility pulling back the madness. Sometimes non-linear like early Braid, sometimes straight-ahead smarter-than-The Get Up Kids emo rock, but always structurally interesting, Red Animal War will surely be a band on the rise.
