The Sweethearts – L.U.V – Review

The Sweethearts

L.U.V (Mortville)

Well I’ll be a gotohell… Teenie boppers looking for the next No Doubt need look no further. Super cutesy vocals are superimposed over moderately aggressive guitars that stay crunchy in milk. The music is decent energetic stuff, with production as slick as these pages. Uninspired lyrics about lovey-dovey schlock and heartbreak are delivered in a moon-June-spoon format. The ’60s bubblegummer “Foolish Game” is a silly variation on The Toys’ “Lover’s Concerto,” which is a silly variation on Bach’s “Minuet in G.” So with nothing new to say and no tasty way of saying it, you’re left with a pretty good instrumental.

Niceties are thankfully set aside when a boy-type person steps up to the mic and sneers all snotty-like. He’s not as concerned with being on key or sounding sweet, he’s like the wheat side to her sugar frosting. In all honesty, it’s not a bad release, just not for those of us on the Atkins musical diet. You’ll probably dig The Sweethearts now that you think Pink is punk. You’ll catch more flies with this than Fabulous Disaster or The Sharp E’s, but who the fuck wants more flies? Give me vinegar!
