The Junior Varsity – The Great Compromise – Review

The Junior Varsity

The Great Compromise (British)
by Lauren Bussard

On the debut release from Chicago post-punk group The Junior Varsity, the moody pop of old Jimmy Eat World tracks meets the viciously lovelorn lyrics of Alkaline Trio and is topped off with sprawling guitar riffs and emotionally torn melodies. My favorite track, “Don’t Forget to Set the House on Fire Before You Crawl into Bed,” starts with a slow and intense drum buildup before crashing into razor-sharp lyrics and a piercing guitar solo. It makes my skin crawl, in a good way.
