Das Ich
Lava Glut (Metropolis)
by Wa
Das Ich could best be described as quirky, mysterious, and enduring. They’ve influenced the sound of industrial music as much as Skinny Puppy, Einsturzende Neubaten, and Laibach ever did, but they’ve never quite realized the financial rewards for their efforts. Stefan Ackerman and Bruno Krams’ highly theatrical approach and unforgiving lyrics are performed in German, as they have been since 1989; a run that includes 14 albums, and countless tours in both Europe and the U.S.
On their new album, Lava Glut, Das Ich take their familiar industrial dance sound and introduce an epic layer of Carl Orff-like Teutonic symphonies as an undercarriage. Songs begin delicately and become increasingly more complex until many facets are exposed and many sharp edges revealed. This incredible mindfuck is best enjoyed while sitting alone, enveloped in darkness. The CD also includes video footage of “Destillat” from their 2002 Mera Luna Festival performance, and a Das Ich 2003 USA scrapbook.
