Edie Sedgwick
Her Love is Real…But She is Not (DeSoto)
by Scott Hefflon
This is disturbing on many levels. It’s got novelty written all over it, but beneath the kitch, there’s obvious talent. But it’s goofed out, and many, many of the sounds used are annoying and abrasive. The 40-second “Tim Robbins” is damn near DHR-style. The rest is, uh, trendy electronics (aka, lame) slathered over indie rock with heavy Devo jerkiness. Ok, I’ve described the music and put off the obvious, so they wouldn’t be the first words outta my mouth: “Dude, that’s a dude.” Edie Sedgwick was evidently a ’60s “It Girl,” hanger-on to Warhol and Dylan, who OD’d. I don’t know if that’s true or not, and I don’t care, because it doesn’t affect the music. Prior to gender modification (or at least the photoshoot), Edie Sedgwick reincarnate was Justin Moyer of Dischord bands El Guapo and Antelope. I don’t know if the gender switch is true or not, but I expect the band name-drops are legit. Oh, and all the songs are about celebrities. Yeah, cuz they need the attention, cuz no one else listens to them or cares, right? Ok, the shocker is, this is quite good, annoying sounds and novelty aside. New wave was always weird, lots of gender-bending, and the drum sounds sucked and some of the keyboard sounds grated yer nerves. So this is pretty accurate…
