Relic Cuts The Intro
by Scott Hefflon

Every unsigned band in the world calls their music impossible to categorize, because most unsigned bands suck, and they’re still trying to figure out what they’re good at, what they enjoy, not to mention build up a fanbase that’ll give them unmistakable feedback as to what songs they like and what songs they wish the band’d drop from the set list. Relic Rust‘s debut has some god-awful tunes, no doubt, but there are songs of effortless beauty, songs of timelessness, and a couple you can snap your fingers to, if yer so inclined. Me? I’m usually too high-strung to sit through strummy acoustic shit. Lots of bands wish they were Coldplay, and most just write boring slow songs. And “alt-country” usually means “shut this off” to me, no matter how thriving that genre may be. Relic Rust, unsigned status and bad band name notwithstanding, have a lot of to offer, if someone were to explain that dropping in a reggae jam is probably a good way to get pelted with rotten fruit. Even the ballad, “Hold On,” works. Ahem, for a ballad. With a little direction/advise and radio-friendly production, these guys might be able to squeeze out a few tunes that’d catch on and show what they’ve got.
