With A Profound Hatred of Man: Shrapnel Inc., all pieces of Shai Hulud‘s past have now been gathered. A collection of EPs, comp tracks, and rarities, it’s the one last record you need (aside from Hearts Once Nourished With Hope and Compassion, That Within Blood Ill-Tempered, and that other collection of odds-n-ends that has the longest title ever) to become a true fan of the band. Included are the debut three-song EP from which the title of this collection comes (featuring original vocalist Damien Moyal, who would go on to form As Friends Rust), the split with Indecision called The Fall of Every Man (Shai Hulud’s best songs ever, in my opinion), the split with Another Victim called A Whole New Level of Sickness, and more. While the Metallica and Bad Religion (yikes) covers are best skipped, the rest of the content maps out a nice trajectory of musical development for these Floridian tech metalcore visionaries. I’ve said it many times and I’ll say it again: These fellas were ahead of their time. Not only did they make something entirely their own out of NYHC, West Coast pop punk, and nerdy death metal, but they did it better and with more heart than anyone who’s copied them. So pick up every single record and study the shit outta ’em, because this is the real deal.
