Nano-Neuclonic Cyborg Summoning (Blackmarket Activities)
by Hansel Merchor

Progressive rock that’s by no means cliché is rare these days. Eclectic extreme trio Behold… The Arctopus, for instance, distances themselves from the rest by being purely instrumental, with less sticking to melodies and standard songwriting, opting instead for hammering virtuosity and improvised jams, which results in some futuristic troglodyte rock. Now, that last tag won’t make sense to most, but a quick check of third track “Sensory Amusia” will no doubt clear all skepticism. The easiest bands to compare BTA’s to are Voivod (because of their endless sonic quests) and Atheist (for introducing odd tempos and intricate patterns to extreme music). Behold… The Arctopus is guilty on all those counts, and also of not being all that engaging. Most of this stuff is, technically speaking, awe-inspiring, however, once Neno-Neuclonic Cyborg Summoning is over, besides a migraine from hell, there’s not much left.
