New Pixies mobile app — it’s educational!

The Pixies, arguably the most influential and pioneering band of the alt/rock movement, who influenced and won the praise of artists from Nirvana to U2 to David Bowie, have just dramatically expanded their website.

The band’s entire studio catalogue – Come On Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, Bossanova, and Trompe le Monde – complete B-sides, the Best Of, and official live releases and EPs, is now available in CD-quality, lossless digital files (MP3, Apple Lossless and FLAC), exclusively on www.pixiesmusic.com.  The Pixies’ Live Show Archive, comprised of high-quality recordings of Pixies’ concerts that will be added to on a weekly basis, plus new and past Pixies’ merchandise, are now united into one place and available directly from the band.  All high-quality digital albums can be downloaded for $9.99, and all EPs for $3.99.

The newly-expanded site also features the complete Pixies’ “gigography” that aggregates set lists, fan photos and videos, going back to 1988.  Fans are invited to comment on their favorite shows and share their own photos and videos with the Pixies’ fan community.

In addition, a brand new Pixies’ app for iPhone is now available on iTunes (here)  and Android (here). The app features a free stream of the Pixies’ near-mythic 1987 “Purple Tape” EP, available again in the U.S. after a 10-year absence.  It also offers a free audio download of the band’s 2004 Coachella performance, Minotaur artwork from Vaughan Oliver and Simon Larbalestier (who created the original artwork for all five of the band’s studio albums), and on-demand streaming of live show videos and archive performances, including the 2005 acoustic Newport Folk Festival show.  The iPhone and Android apps also feature fan profiles, rewards and leaderboards, an in-app store offering the complete studio catalogue and merchandise, as well as full social integration with Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare.

And if this isn’t enough Pixies for you, the band will take the “Doolittle Tour” on the road this fall in the U.S. Visit www.pixiesmusic.com for dates and more information.
