Our Lady Peace premieres “Heavyweight” video

“Heavyweight”, the first official video from Juno-Award winning Canadian band Our Lady Peace’s eighth studio album, Curve, debuted on their website.

Recorded in Toronto and at band founder Raine Maida’s L.A. Home studio with co-producer Jason Lader [Jay-Z’s “99 Problems,” Mars Volta, Julian Casablancas, Rilo Kiley, Elvis Costello, Noah & the Whale], Curve is set for release April 17 via  eOne Music. The first radio single, “As Fast As You Can,” impacts U.S. radio in April.

Commenting about “Heavyweight,” which was shot in a small town outside of Toronto called Bowmanville, Raine says, “The video gods were with us and director Christopher Mills. Chris stumbled upon an old abandoned home that served as a real-life fight club run by an ex-pro boxer. The home was filled with old boxing paraphernalia and the metaphors fit the song perfectly. The fact that we got to blow the house up works on so many levels.”

A photo of Canadian heavyweight boxer George Chuvalo as a young man on the cover of Curve brings out the album’s pugilistic theme.

Maida recently blogged on AOL about the similarities between rockers and fighters: “Over the years, I have come to realize that musicians and boxers have a lot in common. There are strong emotional and physical similarities between the two. The boxer skillfully relies on rhythm and improvisation to control a fight. An artist relies on rhythm and improvisation to help guide the listener. The boxer uses footwork, punching combinations and tempo to attack and escape his opponent. The artist uses chord progressions, melody and tempo to help the listener escape. Either in the ring or onstage, both the fighter and artist put a piece of their soul on display in a fascinating struggle of determination and acceptance. It’s a struggle for affirmation that their work and life force are worthwhile. This war is an age old battle between ego and the sacred self. One designed to fight the other to heal.”
