Big Hair hits you like a whirling punk Turkish dervish. A wild frenzy of bass, fiddle, and nasal, screaming vocals a la Primus that maintains a frenetic energy.
The songs range from indie rock to metal to snarly Pistols-esque punk with a bit of Jello vocal jiggle. The production spotlights the siner and ignore the band.
Funny Kar cruises like a beach-bound mobile loaded with guitar hooks and juiced on melody. Some songs delve into power pop, they come out smelling of punk.
Half Japanese are a genre in and of themselves, so everything they’ve done has been unmistakably them, and the flavor doesn’t change much over the years.
You could say they’re a Goth/funk band with a little bluegrass thrown in, but their track on the Soon compilation, “Midnight,” comes across like Vegas Goth.
