Double live CD, last with Anneke van Gierssbergen, one of the great female singer of our time. I’ve followed them from metal to pop to trip-hop and back.
Anneke’s voice soars above the tinkerings, pulses, and throbs, always sounding vaguely Irish to these ears. The catch in her throat will put a lump in yours.
Moody and expressive, sometimes dreamy and scarce, sometimes “trip rock,” Anneke is now using her lovely voice comfortably, not to win awards or show off.
If you follow these genres, most of these bands are familiar. They’re mostly the big names, with little “filler,” and omissions were probably licensing issues.
Chuck and Eric assemble an all-star band (James Murphy, Steve DiGiorgio, and Dave Lombardo), all five bringing their definition of Bay Area thrash to the game.
With 17 tracks, 76 minutes, there’s something here for anyone into metal: Heavy, power, nü, black, death, doom, epic, Goth, hardcore, and the schools within.
