Babylon Sad – Kyrie – Review

Babylon Sad

Kyrie (Massacre)
by Scott Hefflon

Rising from the dead Messiah, guitarist Daniel Rass had an ambitious vision of Gothic doom metal. After numerous lineup changes, Babylon Sad signed to Massacre, re-recorded Kyrie, then changed members again. Despite the changes, Babylon Sad remains true to its original concept. Incorporating tympani, violin, samples, and spoken word into a monstrous dirge is an unsettling mix at best. Typical of doom metal are the drumming and metallic solos that rip through the more cathedralesque keyboards. Kyrie owes its best moments to the moody shifts and instrumental surrealism that are truly haunting. But I’m not a great fan of cookie monster vocals.
