Tripe – Too Much Fond – Review

Tripe

Too Much Fond
by Lex Marburger

It sucks you in. Too Much Fond, the latest EP by Tripe, grabs you by the balls and thrusts you into the turbulent waters of their interpretation. Tight, well-crafted songs with a sense of timing and musicianship that you don’t usually find anymore. Tripe’s vocals are familiar, but clean and solid, not needing any trick effects to fatten out the sound, and the lyrics are intelligent, well-written, and focus mainly on the alienation of the younger generations in society (ha! didn’t even say X!). My favorite song on Too Much Fond is “Left Handed Gift.” An intro reminiscent of Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain” segues into a 6/3 halftime rumbling, switching to 4/4 for the vocals. The lyric describes the combination of opposites as a single object – something pure – and then gives it away. Tripe doesn’t do anything halfway. The songs on Too Much Fond are five solid pieces of music, and none of them are the runt of the litter.
