Jason & The Scorchers
A Blazing Grace (Mammoth)
by Scott Hefflon
Roadhouse rock is not exactly my favorite, but with these moonshine-running, petal-to-the-metal rockers, I can overlook (and fast forward) the whiskey-soaked ballads. Their cover of John Denver’s “Country Roads” is the largest version I’ve ever heard: Looping choruses, screaming guitars, and slamming drums. Evidently these guys had a heyday during the mid-’80s that I can’t tell you about. This is 1995 and Jason & the Scorchers sound great to these ears.
