Doughnuts – The Age of the Circle – Review

Doughnuts

The Age of the Circle (Victory)
by Scott Hefflon

Great band and album names for an all-girl band. Before you even get a chance to envision yet another minutely-talented chick rock band in ludicrous undergarments or smiling oh-so-shyly for the camera, the Doughnuts roar with hardcore metal and blow away any misconceptions. Start over. They’re girls, they’re young, they’re from Sweden, they play hardcore with a very metal influence, and they’re fuckin’ good. They’ve been touring with labelmates Snapcase this summer, and have been getting a great response to their high energy shows. The guitar crunch and squealing is so, well, heavy metal sometimes, it’s strange this still falls under “straight edge hardcore.” Asa’s vocals are dark, tormented, and truly haunting. The exposé of the lies, the hypocrisy and the misconceptions and somehow, it’s a positive thing. Don’t ask me how. It’s a purge of sorts, or an affirmation.
