Spain – The Blue Moods of Spain – Review

Spain

The Blue Moods of Spain (Restless)
by Chris Adams

Spain is a quartet led by bassist Josh Haden, son of jazz legend Charlie Haden. The Blue Moods of Spain is not really a jazz record though – it’s more of a “4-in-the-morning-I-just-finished-a-bottle-of-Jameson’s-and-two-packs-of-cigs-think-I’ll-take-some-Valium” kind of record. A smoky, low/no-brainer, high on atmosphere, low on structure and tempo. Don’t play it in the morning though, when yer not completely Von Bulowed; you might mistake it for the most monotonous music to ever sloth past yer ears. (Sadly, the album doesn’t come with a free bottle of whiskey. C’mon guys – marketing, marketing!)
