Heavy Vegetable – Frisbie – Review

Heavy Vegetable

Frisbie (Cargo)
by Lex Marburger

At first, I thought Heavy Vegetable was well-produced indie rock, even though that could very well be completely contradictory. After a few more listens though, I found that Frisbie was four extremely talented musicians playing goofy-surreal, off-kilter pop. With the melodies jumping around and twisting like a weasel attacking a snake, and drums stuttering and pushing the songs far beyond left field, Heavy Vegetable could easily slide into a category of music school students far too intelligent for their own good, making music inaccessible to 90% of their listeners. But they’ve got a catch.

Instead of coming down and saying, “This is our music. It is odd, but you must like it,” they have quirky lyrics and obviously are too busy having fun to be pretentious. To hear the line “A curse on the raving fuckface who took my spatula away from me,” sung in beautiful harmony with a bouncy background is a wonderful thing.

Also on my list of why Heavy Vegetable is a great band are “Jackie Chan is a Punk Rocker,” and “Henry Mancini Goes Surfing.” If you don’t want to exercise your brain, listen to the happy, silly lyrics. If you don’t like goofy words, listen to the music. Either way, you’ve got the making of a cult here.
