La Gritona – Arrasa Con Too – Review

La Gritona

Arrasa Con Too
by Scott Hefflon

A few 7″s and split 7″s (all of which are devastating, by the way), La Gritona puts together a full-length of plodding drums, sludgy guitars screeching with feedback, mile-thick bass, and a howling lunatic on vocals. They’ve been compared to Rollins, Helmet, Die Kreuzen, Voivod, and more, but they really don’t sound like anyone. To really confuse matters, I’d like to add a hint of the slower A.C. material to the list, and a bit of Sam Black Church vocal style. Confusing? Yeah, it is. It’s also unnerving, even to those who like ugly, chaotic music.

While still in unsigned, local status, it’s easy to see how a band with this much identity could sign to a, shall we say, “specialty label.” While all the aforementioned bands do have influence, it is merely a flicker in an otherwise original stew of sound. It’s angry, ugly and noisy. It’s an acquired taste, so novices beware!
