Infestation – Conceived – Review

Infestation

Conceived
by Scott Hefflon

Boston is not exactly notorious for its grindcore scene. But make no mistake about it, there is a true underground network that doesn’t need scenester say-so nor mass audience support to exist. Seeing as I can count the real death/sludge/doom/whatever bands on one hand, it’s not hard to pick a favorite: Infestation. There is a frightning number of “internationally acclaimed” bands that haven’t the intensity and know-how that pours out of these local guys. Why some label hasn’t scooped them up is beyond me.

On Conceived, Infestation doesn’t fuck around. They recorded a real demo in a real studio and paid real money. It shows. The mix is clear and fair to each musician, allowing each to show off the fact that they’re tight, adept, and push the envelope of an intentionally restrictive genre. Mike DiSalvo has a barrel-chested growl, that meshes neatly with the dual guitars that are tuned so low, your heart rumbles with them. Varying the tempos between the hyperspeed of death, and the slow, crushing paces of a herd of elephants strolling through your yard, Infestation is well worth further investigation.

Upon asking about town, it seems Infestation is well-known and respected. Where there is a drive, there will be an outcome – be it great or small. Just because you don’t see mobs of death heads getting an espresso at your favorite coffeshop, never fool yourself that they’re not out there cultivating their own scene. Whether you know it or not, whether you like it or not, dark, deathy, ugly, loud, evil music is a sweet symphony to some ears. Abandon all hope.
