J Church – Nostalgic For Nothing – Review

J Church

Nostalgic For Nothing (Broken Rekids)
by Joshua Brown

J Church play unassuming, introspective in an out-and-about way, pop punk. They get their name from a trolley line in their hometown of San Francisco. Their music can be likened to the comfortable scratchiness of a hand-me-down sweater, in contrast to the Fat Wreck Chords/Epitaph camp, whose style is slick and trendy not in an uncool fashion like Pimpgear. The tempo falls between fast hardcore and straight rock like the Damned, whose beat remained middle-of-the-road so that it didn’t draw undue attention to itself. The vocals and the rest of it are pretty M.O.R., too. J Church refrain from hitting you over the head with anything, yet end up sounding better than most of their colleagues. I guess more isn’t always the answer.

Nostalgic For Nothing is a J Church singles compilation. Same shit; just as cool, if not more so.
