1000 Mona Lisas
New Disease (RCA)
by Dana Buoniconti
Even though I find the whole punk-pop phenomenon rather grating at this point, 1000 Mona Lisas play that type of music well. Thankfully, no faux British accent, no green hair, and no teen angst are to be found here. Just 14 punchy rave-ups, including a blistering cover of Paul McCartney and Wings’ “Jet.” Their attack reminds me a bit of Clockhammer, an amazing little-known band I haven’t heard from in several years. 1000 Mona Lisas fill the void nicely.
