A Thin Line Between Love and Hate – Review

A Thin Line Between Love & Hate

with Martin Lawrence, Lynn Whitfield, Regina King
Written and directed by Martin Lawrence

Darnell (Martin Lawrence) is a loquacious lothario who works in a nightclub called Chocolate City with his friend Tee (Bobby Brown). A childhood friend, Mia (Regina King), comes back to visit after being in the air force, but she’s no longer the little girl he grew up with – she’s become a mature, self-confident and attractive woman and Darnell develops a strange new attraction towards her even though they were never “involved.” When he meets an alluring and mysterious woman named Brandi Web (Lynn Whitfield), a well-to-do real estate broker, he makes a bet with Tee that he can win her over. Although Brandi is totally out of his league – she’s much too smart and sophisticated to fall for his tricks and lines – he eventually wins her over. But she refuses to sleep with him until he tells her that he loves her and after fighting with his conscience, he caves in and whispers the “L” word. Of course, once he’s won her over, the thrill of the chase is gone and he realizes that Mia is the woman he really wants, but Brandi, whose been hurt too many times in the past, goes off the deep end and refuses to go away. The plot then takes a dark twist and turns into a Fatal Attraction, with Brandi terrorizing Darnell and his family and friends.

This film explores the blurred boundaries between love and obsession, and the consequences to hurting the people you care about. It will provoke both thought and laughter. And don’t ever say the “L” word unless you mean it!
