Girl 6 – Review

Girl 6

with Theresa Randle, Isaiah Washington, Spike Lee
Written by Suzan-Lori Parks
Directed by Spike Lee
by J. Lianna Ness

Girl 6 is an out-of-work actress who takes a job as a phone-sex operator to pay the bills. Lured at first by the cash and the free time the job gives her, she becomes seduced by the idea of creating different personas, an experience she applies to her acting. However, she becomes addicted to it, walking the fine line between fantasy and reality, a fact frequently pointed out by her next door neighbor (Spike Lee). Her look also changes throughout the film, reflecting the fact that she’s getting carried away with her role-playing and starting to turn into the characters she creates for her customers. Girl 6‘s kleptomaniac ex-husband pesters her to get back together with him, but the more she moves towards self-discovery, the more she moves away from him and the old life she’s trying to leave behind.

There are also numerous cameo appearances by famous faces including Madonna, Ron Silver, John Turturro, Quentin Tarantino, Halle Berry, Rolanda Watts, Richard Belzer, and Naomi Campbell.
