Drain – Offspeed and in There – Review

Drain

Offspeed and in There (Trance Syndicate)
by Joshua Brown

King Coffey, percussionist for the Butthole Surfers, has this album all to himself, though the ’92 Drain debut featured Owen McMahon of Cherubs and David McCreath. Offspeed and In There showcases Mr. Coffey’s impressive record collection and his collection of exotic instruments, drums, samplers, and effects machines. He melds together dub, hip-hop, industrial, ambient, and jazz. Although I’m duly impressed with K.C.’s work as a sound collector, I really don’t see how this recording adds anything to the genre of genre fusionists. Not bad in a disconcerting way, but it smells like an ego trip.
